Then people might say there are too many Greeks or too many people from East Germany or eastern Europe as a whole—and that never became a major issue. As each new phase in the migration program unfolded the people who’d come in the previous phase were accepted.

It was the United States’ involvement in the war that prevented Australia being invaded. It’s worth recalling that Britain had been at war and we had been at war for two years and five months before the United States came into the war, and if it had not been attacked at Pearl Harbor when would it have come into the war, if ever? I would say that, in today’s world, with nearly twenty million people Australia is not defensible and that we really need the same sense of commitment and belief in the future to build this into a nation of 40, 45 million people, and then I believe we would start to be defensible in our own right.
